The Academy: Game On

The Academy: Game On - Monica Seles See more reviews at What Danielle Did NextGame On is one of those books that falls under what I call "Fast Food Fiction" along with The Selection and Gossip Girl series. Silly, shallow but oh so much fun! Like binging on a McDonalds, you crave it, stuff your face with it and then when it's done, swear off it until next time you get a craving #sorrynotsorry. Our heroine is Maya, a small town girl who earns a highly coveted tennis scholarship to The Academy, the premier sports academy for rising stars. Thrust amongst some of the wealthiest/talented/vicious young sports stars Maya finds herself torn between her love for the sport and the temptations that fame and fortune have to offer. This book is less about the sporting side of things and more about how easy it is to get caught up in the glittering empty promises fame awards you without doing the work. Maya, sweet and naive at the start of the book finds her head turned by Nicole, the Maria Sharapova of the Academy and Travis and Jake, Soccer stars and sons of the Academy director leaving her true friends Cleo and Renee behind. The story isn't the greatest. The plot is pretty paper thin and the love triangle grows a bit tiresome. The plotting and scheming verges on the ridiculous as Maya uncovers who her friends truly are and the storyline has more twists and turns than a roller-coaster. The characters aren't particularly well developed so it was hard to care what happened to them but it's a fun quick trashy read and perfect for a sun lounger beside the pool. I'm looking forward to book two for my next binge craving!
